Heron Lakes Golf Course (Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary)
Golf courses can provide a valuable backdrop for teaching the general public about residential IPM and sustainable landscape maintenance. Representatives from three different educational efforts will discuss their programs and results during a tour of Heron Lakes Golf Course, a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary. The Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf Courses works to reduce golf's environmental footprint and helps promote positive actions beyond the golf course borders. "Golf Course Quality Lawns", a presentation hosted through local government agencies, provides an opportunity for golf course superintendents to share the techniques and strategies for growing the best lawn in the least time at the lowest cost. The First Green is an environmental education program using golf courses as environmental learning labs. Students test water quality, collect soil samples, identify plants, design plantings, and participate in other environmental projects on the course.
